Welcome to Costituendo, a non-profit blog to discuss the latest news on the National Constituency of the Democratic Party. The administrators are a small group of young delegates from the Province of Venice, Italy, independently providing an insider's view on what could be one of the most grassroots moments in the recent history of our country! This blog is in Italian for the most part, but we will try to translate the main events and conclusions in English here. Everyone is invited to post comments, questions and suggestions to improve this blog and to stimulate the discussions!
- First meeting of the National Constituency Milan, October 27, 2007, 10.30 a.m.
- Commissions to draft Statute, Charter of values and Ethical code have been nominated; each will have 100 members chosen among the 2860 delegates by the former candidates and Veltroni. The outcome of the Primaries has been respected, as Veltroni got to nominate the large majority of the Commission members. Public outcry as the document including the Commision details is passed in a rushed vote, without previous debate. The document includes details on the timing for the establishment of the local levels of the Party and has been publicly criticised by Bindi (former cadidate to the Secretariat) also for its contents.
-November 4, the secretary nominates the members of his executive team: 19 people, of whom 9 are women. They have different backgrounds and political histories, the youngest member is a woman of 32, the oldest a man of 67.
-November 10, Regional Constituencies are held in all regions, secretaries are elected and the election details of the local levels of the party are discussed.
-November 24, the temporary coordinators of the Provinces are elected by the elected delegates to the National and regional Constituencies and by the local administrators belonging to the Democratic Party. The coordinator of the province of Venice is Gabriele Scaramuzza, elected with 91.7% of the votes.
-February 10, primary elections to select components of the local levels of the Democratic Party. With a preference vote about 140 people were elected into the Comunal Assembly. Man-woman parity in representatives was once again respected.
-February 16, Rome, formal approval of the founding charters of the Party: Statute, Ethical Code and Value Code were approved by the National Constituency.
-February 17, national secretary Walter Veltroni's tour bus kicks off; it will stop by all Italian provinces. The electoral campaign will last until April 11, 2008.
-April 13, 14, the Democratic Party id defeated at the national elections, but achieves a good result (over 33% in both parliamentary chambers), an improvement compared to the 2006 election results, when Ulivo (made up by the then-DS and Margherita parties)achieved 31%.
